Obituary

CHARLES T. KING Charles Talmadge King, Sr., age 93, crossed peacefully from this world into the next early in the morning hours of Thursday, June 11, 2015. In his ninety fourth year, and as he had wished and planned, he died in his family home at Snow Hill Farm near Fair Play, SC. He leaves behind his devoted wife of more than seven decades, Mollie Burrell King of the residence. Following his graduation from Fair Play High School, Mr. King served his country in the United States Navy for thirty-one years with honor and distinction, and received medals for low altitude combat reconnaissance photography. He served in WW II, the Korean Conflict, and in the Vietnam War. Mr. King retired from military service in 1971. He and Mollie returned to his beloved red hills of upstate South Carolina. He lived out the remainder of his life within a mile and a half of his birthplace in Fair Play. During his 'retirement,' Mr. King raised cattle and timber, and found great joy, along with his wife, in clearing land, cutting fence posts, building fences, and planting trees. His vigor lasted through most of his eighth decade. He had a tremendous respect for the working man and the little guy, but admired exceptional skill and talent. He formed a partnership with Tommy Wyche and David Freeman in developing Seminole Point on Lake Hartwell, and was a founding shareholder of Community First Bank. Charles also contributed to his community by helping organize the Double Springs Rescue Squad, and was a polling place volunteer for a number of years. Though he received only eleven years of formal schooling, he had a tremendous respect for higher education and assisted each of his sons in their pursuit of college degrees. He was engaged with the world until the end of his life, having read "The Wall Street Journal" on his final day. In addition to his beloved wife, Mollie, he leaves to carry on his legacy four sons, Charles T. King, Jr. and his wife, Janet, of Berkeley, CA, Ronald H. King of Santa Rosa, CA, Robert B. King of Atlanta, GA, and James R. King of San Francisco, CA; three grandsons, C. Matthew King and his wife, Sarah, Samuel K. King, and Benjamin S. King; and three great-grandchildren, Mollie Carol King, Lucy Pearl King and Liam Charles King. Mr. King was preceded in death by his father, Charles Knox King and his mother, Eunice Marett King; a brother, Samuel H. King, and a sister, Dorothy A. King. A Funeral Service to celebrate and honor the life of Mr. Charles T. King will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the Beaverdam Baptist Church in Fair Play, with Rev. Stacey Griffis officiating. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. The King family will receive friends at the residence, 3020 Highway 243, Fair Play, on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Contributions in memory of Mr. King may be made to the charity of one's choice.
