Alfred Harvey Hooper, Sr., age 90, of Anderson, SC, passed away Thursday, October 14, 2021, at AnMed Health Medical Center.
Alfred was born January 21, 1931 in Anderson, SC. He was the son of the late James CoDale and Minnie Lee Pierce Hooper. He was a graduate of The Carolina School of Commerce and Tri-County Technical College with degrees in business. Alfred was a retired employee of Auto Zone, the former owner of Hooper Brothers Shell Service Station that was located on Greenville Street in Anderson, SC, and a former employee of Hawkins Vend-O-Matic.
Alfred was married to his loving wife, Edna Hann Hooper for 63 wonderful years. She preceded him in death. He is survived by a daughter, Debra (Debbie) Allen, a son, Alfred (Al) H. Hooper, Jr., five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and seven siblings: Ailene Dixon (decease), James Hooper, Jr. (deceased), Gaynelle Kay (Marvin) of Belton, SC, Adelle Medlin of Rock Hill, SC, David Hooper, Sr., of St. Matthews, SC, Theron Hooper (deceased), and Zeke Hooper (Lorraine) of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Alfred served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a heavy weapons man mortar carrier. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, the United States Presidential Unit Citation, 3 bronze stars, the Korean SVC Medal, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. He earned a Purple Heart, but declined it and asked that it be given to someone else that may have deserved it more than he did.
Alfred was a Master Mason of the Masonic Ruff Lodge No. 240 (AFM). He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and he served on the Anderson City Zoning Board.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and deep appreciation to all the staff and caregivers at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home for their wonderful care and compassion that Alfred received while he was a resident there.
A graveside service will be held Monday, October 18, 2021, at 11:00 am at New Silver Brook Cemetery with military honors by Campbell Patriots Post 184. Rev. Dale Cross will officiate the service. Masks are recommended.
