Alice Ann (Radford) Gilbert, 98, wife of 64 years to James Parker Gilbert, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 27, 2023, under hospice care at The Gardens at Eastside in Greenville, SC. She was born in March of 1925 in Fairmont WV, and immediately faced great odds against surviving. She weighed 2.5 pounds at birth and her mother unfortunately died from complications of childbirth. As her father could not take care of her alone, she was taken in by her aunt and uncle, Della and Herschel Riggs, who raised her as their own with their daughter, Ede. After graduating high school, Alice worked such jobs as a clerk in a coal mine company store, as a receptionist for an insurance company and as a receptionist for an eye doctor. It was at the eye doctor's office where she met co-worker Jim Gilbert. They were married in 1952. Through the years with Jim's career as a Mechanical Engineer with American Electric Power, they lived in New Haven, WV, Canton, OH, and Columbus, OH. Alice was devoted to being a homemaker through all these years, raising three boys - Bob, Bill, and Tom. After retiring, Jim and Alice moved to Anderson, SC, where they became members of Concord Baptist Church in Anderson, SC. Alice was also a member of the Joy Sunday School class at Concord Baptist. In the summer of 2016, Jim and Alice relocated to Greenville to be in assisted living near family. Jim passed away later that year. Alice went on to endear herself to the workers and residents at Brookdale and later at The Gardens at Eastside. Alice continued to thrive until February of 2023. After several hospital stays and gradual declining health, but still with a fighting spirit throughout, Alice passed away in May 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Hattie Radford, guardians Herschel and Della Riggs, cousin, but more aptly "sister" Ede, and husband James Parker Gilbert. She is survived by her son Bob and wife, Diane, son Bill and wife Debbie, son Tom and wife, Susan; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Saturday, June 10, 2023, from 4:00-5:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 5:00 pm in the Chapel with Rev. Bill Parnell officiating. A committal service will be held Monday, June 12, 2023, at 10:00 am at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
