Obituary

Amos Milton Terry, age 91, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2016, at his residence. Born in Iva, SC, on May 11, 1924, he was the son of the late Richard E. Terry and the late Carrie Bruce Terry. He was a 1942 graduate of Iva High School and graduated from Clemson College in 1950. Amos proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge, working in communications. He was a member of the American Legion, Gideon's International, and The First Baptist Church of Iva, where he was a former Sunday school teacher and Deacon. During his career he was an assistant to the chief engineer of Hartwell Dam, where he was responsible for the inaugural opening of the flood gates. Amos retired from the FAA Commission as a professional engineer. He was the author of five books dealing with the subject of southern culture. He is survived by his loving wife, Imogene Ozmint Terry; his children, Bill, Walter, and George Terry, Jane Drott, Maggie Strickland, Angie Davis, and Debbie Patterson; two brothers, John and Alvin Terry; 23 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Danzmayr Terry; a son, Philip Milton Terry; brothers, Richard and W.T. Terry; and sisters, Pauline and Ollie McCoy, Verna Carter, Sadie Loftis, and Ruby Thornton. Following a private committal service, the family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Iva, on Thursday, February 18, 2016, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. with the funeral service beginning at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend Jerry Gray and Reverend Paul Pinson officiating.
