She was born in Anderson on April 26,1907, the daughter of Victoria Heard Howard and Thomas Edward Howard, Sr. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Winthrop College (now Winthrop University) in 1929. She taught grade school in Anderson during the Great Depression and worked in advertising in New York City where she met her first husband, Joel Howard, who predeceased her after a marriage of thirty-three years. She was alsopredeceased by her second husband, Robert Brierly, after a marriage of thirteenyears, and her brother, Thomas Edward Howard, Jr. She is survived by her nephew, Thomas Carlton Howard and his wife, Judith RoseScott, of Blacksburg, Virginia and two grandnephews, Christopher Frederick Howard ofRichmond, Virginia, and John Marcus Edward Howard and his wife, Julie McGhee Howard, of Atlanta, Georgia, and two great grandnieces, Lucy Rose and Sadie CamilleHoward of Atlanta. Anna Julia will be remembered for her sharp sense of humor, her tenacity of spirit, and her enthusiasm for life. A Graveside Service will be conducted at 2:30 pm on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Old Silver Brook Cemetery conducted by Dr. Dennis R. Tedder. THE MC DOUGALD FUNERAL HOME, Anderson.
