Obituary

Anna Louise Howell, 101, passed away on February 23, 2018. She was born on the family farm September 28, 1916, at Lake Junaluska, Haywood County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Grover Gudger Leatherwood and Louise Felmet Leatherwood. She was the last of nine siblings; preceded in death by Margaret Campbell, Hugh "Bud" Leatherwood, Clara Bowen, Roy Leatherwood, Alice Leatherwood, Doris McNeil, David Leatherwood and Mary Makuta. Anna married Robert Locke Howell and moved to Morristown, Tennessee, where she raised her family and lived for most of her adult life. She loved playing bridge and preparing meals for her bridge club. She received recognition for delivering Meals-on-Wheels for 25 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Morristown; and was active in the Presbyterian Womens' Organization, Chancel Guild, and the Catherine Miller Sunday School Class. She is survived by a son, Robert Locke Howell, Jr., of Bessemer, Alabama, and a daughter, Margaret Howell Gissendanner of Anderson, S.C. She was predeceased by a son, Jerry Gudger Howell. She had six grandchildren: Scott Howell of Durham, NC, Anna Marie Hinnant of Wilmington, NC, Julie Howell of Charlotte, NC, Daniel Gissendanner, Jr. of London, UK, and Jama Manning of Tallahassee, FL. She had 5 great-grandchildren. Anna was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. The funeral will be at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 25, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church, Morristown, TN with burial to follow at Hamblen Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 600 W Main St, Morristown, TN 37814. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Mayes Mortuary, 444 W Main St, Morristown, TN 37814.
