Anne Herron Lummus, widow of Dr. William F. Lummus, died on September 17, 2023, at the age of 91.
Born in Columbia, SC, she was the daughter of the late Walter Clyde Herron and the late Inez King Herron. After moving to Anderson as a young child, she attended local schools and graduated from Anderson Girls High School and Erskine College. Anne enjoyed several years teaching third grade in Sumter and Charleston before marrying Dr. William F. Lummus in 1957. They were both very active members of Young Memorial A.R.P. Church where Anne taught children's Sunday school for many years. She volunteered at Meals on Wheels for nearly two decades and served on the first board of directors. She later worked in her husband's medical office for 18 years and was a former member of the Anderson Garden Club.
In addition to raising her family, Anne enjoyed bridge, music, trips especially to New York City and Europe with husband Bill, and gardening. She had quite a green thumb which she believed to have inherited from her father who farmed in several areas around Anderson and Starr.
Anne is survived by her sons, William F. Lummus and wife Patricia of Atlanta, John H. Lummus and wife Melissa of Anderson; her daughter Kathryn L. Ash and husband Darren of Charlotte; a brother, Clyde Herron of Atlanta; seven grandchildren, William Griffin Ash (Halsey), John Winston Ash (Hillary), Elizabeth Faulkner Lummus, Weldon Lummus Burke (Teddy), William Faulkner Lummus III, John Herron Lummus, Jr. and Anna Kathryn Lummus; and four great-grandchildren, Anne Winston Ash, John Reid Ash, William Mason Ash and Henry Curran Burke.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dominion of Anderson, Hospice of the Upstate and Home Instead for their wonderful care and compassion. Our special thanks go to caregivers Pat McKinney and Theresa Kimball to whom we will be forever grateful.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023, at 11:00 am at Old Silver Brook Cemetery with Dr. Robby Bell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Young Memorial A.R.P. Church, 508 Boulevard, Anderson, SC. 29621 or Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
