Annie Doreatha Burton Smith, 96, loving wife to the late Elmer J. Smith, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 2, 2018, at Hartwell Health and Rehabilitation. Born in Abbeville, SC, on September 10, 1921, Annie was the last living of nine children of the late Walter and Essie Burton. Annie worked for Orr Lyon Mills until her retirement. Her legacy and love of reading, writing, and painting was woven throughout her children and grandchildren. Her greatest attribute was being a faithful servant in teaching her Sunday School Class at Rocky River Baptist Church where she was a devout member, and sharing the love, peace, joy, and her salvation that came from her relationship with Jesus Christ. Annie is survived by her five children, James Smith (Carole), Sandra Bostic (Carlton), L.O. Smith (Janis), Duane Smith (Cornelia), and Carol Martin (Joe); daughter-in law, Joann Smith; 22 grandchildren; and 70 great-grandchildren. She lived to see six generations. In addition to her parents and husband, Annie was preceded in death by a son, Charles E. Smith; daughter-in-law, Sally N. Smith; son-in-law, Cecil T. Watt; five brothers, Pringle, Yancy, Lee, Ray, and Ansel Burton; and three sisters, Sybil Mitchell, Iris Smith, and Opal Parnell. The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Sunday, March 4, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Rocky River Baptist Church on Monday, March 5, at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Bobby Jones and Dr. Kirt Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at Rocky River Baptist Church Cemetery. Flowers are optional, or memorials may be made to Rocky River Baptist Church, 3266 Lake Secession Rd, Iva, SC 29655.
