Mr. Bannister Allen Anderson, husband of Vicki Ivester Anderson, passed away on Thursday morning November 17, 2022.
Ban, as he was known to many, was also known as Banjo and B.A. He was born to Mr. Hampton Gustavus Anderson, Jr. and Mrs. Alice Allen Anderson in Anderson, SC on January 30, 1936. He grew up with his three brothers on River Street and Broadway Lake where they enjoyed swimming, skiing, and fishing. Ban attended Boys High School and excelled in many sports including baseball and football. He graduated in 1954 and went on to attend the Citadel Military Academy where he played football his freshman year. He later transferred to the University of Georgia as an ROTC cadet where he played some football for his beloved Georgia Bulldogs. Ban majored in Business Administration and graduated Phi Kappa Phi in 1958. After graduation he joined the Army and married Mary Lewis Mims of Greenville, SC, where they were deployed to Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. Together they had two children, Allen and Alice Lee. Regrettably, Allen preceded his father in death in 1988. Alice Lee married Robert Andreottola and resides in Madison, GA.
Ban met and married Vicki Ivester of Greenville, SC, and together were married 41 years. Ban is survived by his brothers Hamp (Hampton Gustavus III), Dicky (Richard Harrison), and Bobby (Charles Robert). He is also survived by his loving niece, Allie Petropolous Anthony and her husband Dustin and their daughter Ivy who adored her uncle Ban; his nephew, C.J. Petropoulous; and his first wife Mary Lewis Anderson. He enjoyed and loved his nieces and nephews Andy, Jim, Elizabeth, Rick, Kathy, Clark, Chase, and Bentley. He is also survived by his first cousins Fred Gilmer of Greenville, SC, and Joanne Gilmer Cole of Charleston, SC; and his special friend J.P.(Johnny) Pickens.
After the Army, Ban joined his father and brothers in the auto parts business known locally as Anderson Auto Parts which was started by his father H.G. in the early 1940's. The business grew into the NAPA Auto Parts chain. After H.G.'s death, Ban became President of H.G.'s thriving business. AAP was the largest southern chain, growing stores in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
Ban was known to be great listener and astute businessman. He was known for his fairness and his ability to see the goodness in people despite their flaws. His charity was Boys and Girls Club of America. Ban was a low handicap and stealth golfer. Being right handed he putted left handed with his trusty double sided blade putter, and in his 80's he often shot his age. His favorite pastimes were spent on Cobbs Glenn golf course, attending Georgia Bulldog football games, and gardening. And above all he loved his beach time on Hilton Head Island, SC with Vicki and their close friends Margaret and Bill Saye, Bill and Dale Sharpton, and Laura Solomon. Special thanks to lifelong physician Dr. William Walker and nurse Courtney who cared for him for so many years.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 20, 2022, at 3:00 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church with Dr. Michael York officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A private committal service will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
