Obituary

Our loving mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother, Betty Summers, passed away January

30, 2026, in her residence at Morningside of Anderson in Anderson, SC. Over her last several days, she

was contacted by her family and heard many stories as they shared their love and goodbyes. In her last

few days, although she could not communicate verbally, she certainly responded with her expressions.

She loved hearing everyone who was able to connect with her. She also loved hearing her personal

playlist and Barbara McAlister's, sister-in-law, personal recordings of Amazing Grace.

Betty was twice married, first to Lawrence Sevier McAlister Jr. (deceased) and second to Leland Griffith

Summers (deceased). She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Woveris and her

sister Anna Smith.

Betty was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 10, 1934 to Joseph and Mary Woveris. Early in her

childhood, they moved to South Bend, Indiana where she spent her youth growing up with her two sisters

Anna and Patt. She often spoke of the family taking the bus to downtown South Bend to the train station

to go visit family in Chicago. She loved color, texture, and design. She also curated a large collection of

eclectic music which she organized and managed on her computer, setting up her favorite playlist for

each day of the week. As a lifelong professional baseball fan, she enjoyed watching her LA Angels/

Dodgers and attending the local Greenville Drive games. Later in her life, she took to scrapbooking and

creating special personalized cards to share with family members and friends. She had an eye for unique

and special items which she enjoyed using to decorate her home.

One of her gifts was that independence she shared with all her children, and exemplified the idea of doing

something your own way. It was often said she always had her own way of doing things. Most of all she

loved traveling in her RV with Lee to visit family all across the country from New Hampshire to South

Carolina to California.

Betty, is survived by Sister: Patt Bloom; Children: Patricia (William) Krivonak, Jeanne (Grady) McEvoy,

Mark McAlister, Bruce McAlister, Joe McAlister, Tom (Mary) McAlister, Ken (Tracy) Summers, Brent
