Betty Jean Whitfield Baker, age 90, of Anderson, SC, passed away Friday, April 28, 2023, at Rainey Hospice House. Born May 9, 1932, in Anderson, SC, she was a daughter of the late Hansel Whitfield and Mary Etta Mize Whitfield. She was married for 71 years to Ben Baker until his death in 2020. She was also preceded in death by 7 siblings, Lee Vaughn, Eunice Webb, Ruzie Brock, Zelma Dodgens, Genny Harbin, Mary Ruth Evans, and Joe Whitfield. Betty spent her career in retail having worked at Bailes Department Store, Meyers Arnold, and Uptons. She especially enjoyed her time as a volunteer at AnMed as a Pink Lady on the cancer floor. She was a devoted member of Pope Drive Baptist Church where she served in the nursery, sang in the choir, and traveled with the senior adult ministry. Betty was a fantastic cook and baker and would prepare a big family meal each Thursday night for everyone to come and enjoy. She was the perfect example of a homemaker and a loving, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her daughters, Becky Ross (Danny) and Judy Ross (John); grandchildren, Benji Ross (April), John Ross (Jennifer), Mary Beth Wright (Jay) and Sarah Brown (Brandon); great-grandchildren, Samuel Ross, Hartley Ross, Baylis Wright, Colby Brown, Baker Ross, Cate Ross, Cole Wright, Griffin Wright and Garrison Brown; brothers, Billy, Johnny, Larry, and Wade Whitfield; and sister, Nell Bailey. The family will receive friends Monday, May 1, 2023, from 5:00-6:30 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. There will be a private family service held Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at 11:00 am at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with Dr. Matthew Danuser officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pope Drive Baptist Church, 2510 Pope Dr., Anderson, SC 29625.
