Betty Milford Ezelle passed away surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at age 93. Born Easter Sunday, April 12, 1925, in Anderson, South Carolina, Betty was raised in Clemson, South Carolina. She is predeceased by her parents, Lee Watson Milford, M.D. and Georgia Martin Milford. Additionally, she is predeceased by her brother, Lee Watson Milford, Jr., M.D., sister-in-law, Betty Larken Milford, and by her husband James Shumate Ezelle to whom she was married from 1947 until his death in 1988. She was married to Richard Cockrell from 1990 to 2013.
Betty graduated from Calhoun-Clemson School and attended Limestone College where she was Secretary of the Student Body. She transferred to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and graduated in 1946. She was a member and officer of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
After marrying James Ezelle in 1947, Betty lived in Anderson where she was a member and President of the Anderson Junior Assembly. Betty and her family left Anderson to live in Macon, Georgia, Maitland and Winter Park Florida for several years and returned to Anderson in 1966. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church where she served on the Vestry and was on the staff as Administrator and Program Coordinator. She organized and led the children's worship service at The Church of the Good Shepard in Maitland, Florida and Grace Episcopal Church in Anderson.
Betty led and organized several prayer groups in Florida and Anderson and also enjoyed study groups, tennis, gardening, the Revelers, the Bird Club and the Torch Sisters. However, Betty considered the most rewarding roles of her life to be that of mother and homemaker. She met weekly with a prayer group for over 40 years and with a bridge club for 60 years.
Betty served on the Board of Visitors at Kanuga Conference Center. She was the administrator and director for the Developmental Center for Exceptional Children in Belton and Anderson. She served on the founding board of directors for Anderson Place, now Brookdale, and she taught, substituted and volunteered in several Anderson Schools. Betty also volunteered at Hospice of the Upstate.
She is survived by her children, James Ezelle, Jr., M.D. (Kayla) of Bellaire, TX; Mary Gay Drake (Scott) of Anderson, SC; Becky Hamrick (Art) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Grandchildren are Brandon Trado (Ashley), Caroline Shealy (Jordan), Aimee Trado (Jon Davis), Tom Hamrick, Savannah Ezelle, and one great-grandson, Logan Trado. Her "adopted" sister is Betty Blackerby. She has one niece, Martha Boyd (Jim), and one nephew, Richard Milford, step-children and step-grandchildren, great-nieces and nephews and several godchildren whose families were very dear to her.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in the church parlor. The funeral service will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the church with Reverend John B. Hardaway, IV officiating. A private family committal service will take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
