Obituary

Betty Jean Porter Burnette, age, 89, of Anderson, SC, and wife of the late Charles B. Burnette, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday morning, March 30, 2022. Born April 15, 1932, in Seneca, SC, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd Porter and Nannie Mae Smith Porter. Betty was a graduate of Girls High and was retired from Wamsutta. She loved her family, her home, and her two dogs, Bella and Lulu. When Betty was able (and even when she wasn't) she loved to stay busy by decorating and rearranging her furniture or helping others in their homes. If she wasn't inside, she would stay out in her yard from morning to evening pulling weeds, planting flowers and just making her flower gardens look immaculate. She had a great knack for making things look pretty. She was also known for her cooking. Her biscuits, cornbread, homemade chocolate and coconut cakes, salmon patties plus many other dishes will be greatly missed by those lucky enough to have enjoyed them. When Betty was younger, she enjoyed playing basketball for her high school team. She also enjoyed bowling with her friends. Betty was gifted with beautiful handwriting skills and she took great pride in her penmanship. In her later years, her eyes would light up every time she saw one of her grandchildren or one of their children. She especially loved holding and playing with the infants and loved cooing at them while trying to coax a smile. Betty was loved and will be missed but she will never be forgotten. She was loved by her children, the late Sue Ellen Hicks (C.W.), Beth Griffin (Horace), Michelle Holt (Jamie), Greg Norris, and Tim Norris; 7 grandchildren, Shannan Holland (John David), Kristi Kinley (Patrick), Matt Holt (Becca), Rusty Griffin, Stevie Kennedy, Wesley Norris, and Kylee Norris; 10 great grandchildren, Makenzie Kimble (Clayton), Baylee Slaton (Timothy), Jamison Walker, Ellison Walker, Sophia Dora, Brodie Dora, Caroline Holt, Livvy Holt, Riley Griffin, and Braxton Griffin; and 3 great-great grandchildren, Ellen Jane Kimble, Sawyer Slaton, and Sully Grace Slaton. She was also preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Howard Wesley Norris; twin brothers, Jack and Joe Porter; and twin siblings, Janice Swaney and James Porter. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 2, 2022, from 6:00-8:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Sunday, April 3, 2022, at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Rev. C.W. Hicks officiating. Burial will follow at South Lawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to MeMe's Place-Crossway Community Church, P.O. Box 268 Sandy Springs, SC 29677. The family will be at the home of her daughter, Beth Griffin.
