Obituary

Beverly Bowie Clark, beloved and cherished wife of Franklin Jacob Clark III and mother of Frank IV, went to heaven on October 17, the day after her 82nd birthday. She was a 1956 graduate of Girls High School where she proudly served as the Yellow Jackets Homecoming Queen. She graduated from Converse College in 1960 with a major in religion and minor in elementary education. While at Converse she was chosen to be on May Court for all four years. Beverly contracted polio in the epidemic that swept our nation in the 1950's and through the quick detection of her father, Dr. Clyde Bowie, the excellent medical care she received at Emory University Hospital and the indomitable spirit of her mother, Bessie, learned to walk with a brace and resume most of her activities. She rode horseback, danced, served in leadership positions, enjoyed summer camp at Camp Greystone, where she was elected Captain of the Evens, and entered fully and enthusiastically into life. She maintained an incredible sense of humor that always made light of her disability. Known for her beauty she excelled academically and pursued music studies at Queen's University in Charlotte and Anderson University where she did postgraduate work in music and piano performance. She delighted her family with her talent and made good use of her Bosendorfer piano, a gift from her ever supportive husband, Frank. Beverly discovered the love of her life, Frank Clark, her senior year in high school and lived happily beside him for 59 years. They traveled with the Air Force and lived mainly in Charlotte and Anderson where, with her support, he distinguished himself as an architect, especially in Anderson with the building of the Court House. They were inseparable and on a recent anniversary he gave her as a card the lyrics of the 50's song, Earth Angel: 'Earth angel, earth angel, the one I adore. Love you forever and evermore. I fell for you and I know the vision of your loveliness. I hope and pray that someday that I'll be the vision of your happiness.' And he was just that! Their happiness was completed with their son, Frank, who in the period of Beverly's failing health was a wonderful caregiver and helper. Beverly's Christian faith was the bedrock of her life and she spoke openly and often about her love for Jesus Christ. She leaves a legacy of faith to all who knew her. Her joy was contagious. She often quoted Preacher Parr, grandfather to her friend, Judy Camp O'Neil, who said, 'Laughter is life's elixir.' She is predeceased by her three babies: Manly Watson, Catherine Prior and Michael Bowie, with whom she is now joyously reunited. She leaves behind her four loving sisters: Eleanor, Eathel, Punkin, Marie and her brother Clyde, brothers-in-law Bill and Ted, and sister-in-law Ginny, and many nieces and nephews and friends. In the words of John Mager's High Flight she has 'slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings and has put out her hand and touched the face of God.' The words of Romans 8:37-39 could be her valedictory:'Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height nor death nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.' Safe home, Beverly! Safe home. The family will have a private service with Rev. Clyde F. Bowie officiating. Memorials can be sent to The Haven of Rest Ministries, 219 W. Whitner Street, Anderson, S.C. 29621.
