William Joe "Bill" Porter, died Wednesday, January 16, 2019.
Born December 24, 1927 to William Alonzo Porter and Mary Sentell Porter, Bill was raised and lived in Anderson, SC all of his life. Bill graduated from Melton High School, where he loved playing basketball. He was on the 1946 state championship basketball team, that was coached bythe first female coach in South Carolina. He went to work for Bell South and retired after 35 years of hard work. He loved fishing and hunting and was a member of the Southern Bell Pioneers.
Bill was predeceased by the love of his life, Faye Evans; daughter, Virginia Susan Smith; parents, brothers, Horace, Edward, Bobby Porter and Charlie Davis; sisters, Addie Spearman, Ollie Bell Sullivan, Mary Jane Crowe, Mrytice Donavan.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth Porter and daughter-in-law, Lettie Porter; one sister, Velma Gunter (Dennis); four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank his special caregiver and friend, Susan McClure. He will be missed and always loved by his nieces and nephews and friends, of which he had many.
The family will receive friends from 1-2:30pm Friday, January 18, 2019 at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow in the chapel at 3:00 pm Friday with Rev. Roger Porter officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Miracle Hill Children's Home, 117 Drummond Lane, Pickens, SC 29671.
