William Newt "Bill" Ward of Anderson, S.C., died at age 84 on December 22, 2018. He was Carol O. Ward's loving husband of 63 years, father of two sons, and grandfather of six. Bill was born January 15, 1934, in Gainesville, Texas, son of the late Ira and Leta Ward. He graduated Gainesville High School at age 16 and entered the Air Force (Strategic Air Command), serving four years. He and Carol met when he was stationed in Charlotte. They moved their family to Anderson in 1971. Bill worked as owner/operator of a long-haul truck, primarily for Senn Trucking and also ATL, for decades, finally retiring at the age of 79 after driving millions of miles in every state of the lower 48. He was an avid basketball player, schooling his sons and their friends, and then his grandkids, in driveway games well into his 70s, impressing everyone with his moves and shooting skill. Bill was a lifelong Cowboys fan and enjoyed a trip with his sons and grandsons to see them in action not long after the new stadium opened in Arlington, Texas. Bill is survived by his wife, Carol; sons, Alan S. Ward (Amanda) of Sugar Land, Texas, and William Brian Ward (Susan) of Greenville; grandchildren, Rebecca, Lindsay, Matthew, Griffin, and Lauren Ward; sister, Dorinda VanBurkleo of McAllen, Texas; and goddaughter, Sharon S. Cousar of Charlotte, NC. He was preceded in death by his brother, Herman Ward, and grandson, Rader William Ward. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, December 27, 2018 at McDougald Funeral Home, 2211 N. Main Street, Anderson, S.C., 29621. The family will receive friends from Noon- 1:30pm prior to the service. Interment will be held at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery on Wednesday January 2, 2018 at 3:00 pm.
