Robert McCurry "Bobby" Hoover, of 2204 Pope Drive, passed away, surrounded by his family on Monday, May 4, 2015, at the Rainey Hospice House. He is survived by his wife, the former Doris Willingham.
Mr. Hoover was born in 1936 in McDowell County, NC. His natural parents were Howard Duval Hoover and Mae McCurry Hoover, of Marion, NC. After the death of his mother, Mr. Hoover was adopted at the age of two by his uncle, Charles Kirby Hoover, and his wife Anna Conley Hoover, of Anderson, SC. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hoover was preceded in death by a brother, Howard D. Hoover, Jr., of Orlando, FL and a sister, Inge Hoover Bouton, of Orlando. FL.
Surviving are sons. Robert Christopher "Chris" Hoover, of Centreville, VA and Charles Martin "Chuck" Hoover, of Marietta, GA; daughter-in-law, Sharon Hoover; grandson, Aaron Christopher Hoover; and granddaughter, Elise Caroline Hoover, all of Centreville, VA; daughter-in-law, Lisa Hoover; granddaughters, Sarah Nicole Hoover and Jessica Anne Hoover, of Marietta, GA; other survivors include, brother, Jeff Hoover; and sister-in-law, Jean Hoover, of Orlando, FL.
Mr. Hoover was a 1954 graduate of Anderson Boy's High School and is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina where he participated in the Marine Corp Division of the N.R.O.T.C. program for four years. At UNC he was a member of The Sigma Nu social fraternity. Mr. Hoover served for a number of years in the United States Naval Reserves in Anderson, SC. For most of his life, Mr. Hoover was a loyal member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Anderson, SC and was a very active participant in many church projects. He was a member and a former president of the Happy Group. He also took great pleasure in serving as a volunteer for various community activities.
Mr. Hoover was retired from Mount Vernon Mills (formerly Riegel Textile Corporation), Trion, GA. While residing in Trion, he was an active member of Trion United Methodist Church were he sang in the choir and served as chairman of the building committee when a fellowship hall was constructed in 1974. While working with youth activities at Trion United Methodist Church, Mr. Hoover taught a Sunday School Class and was a counselor of United Methodist Youth Fellowship. He was especially active in baseball youth activities and Boy Scouts.
A lifetime love of antique and classic cars serves as his favorite hobby, and he was particularly fond of his black 1947 Ford Coupe and his 1951 Ford, which he restored. For eight years Mr. Hoover was president of the Upstate SC Chapter of Early Ford V-8 Club of America. "Bobby" will be remembered for his friendly, outgoing disposition, his generous and caring spirit, and his love of family and friends.
The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at St. Johns United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m with Reverend Dan Batson officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday, May 8, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, 515 South McDuffie Street, Anderson, SC 29625.
