James Bruce Wilson, age 86, of Abbeville, SC, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at Rainey Hospice House.
He was born June 1, 1935 in Greenville, SC, and was the son of the late James Dennis Wilson and Naomi Neal Wilson.
Growing up, Bruce and his family were members of Overbrook Baptist Church and later, he was a member of El Bethel Baptist Church in Greer where he served as a deacon and enjoyed singing in the church choir. Bruce was a great baseball pitcher and enjoyed playing on the church team. He was also quite the slingshot marksman when he was a kid.
Bruce was a veteran of the United States Navy earning the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer and serving aboard the USS Coral Sea from 1954-1956. His tour of duty included the Mediterranean Sea and while in port, he enjoyed sight-seeing. During the Korean Conflict, he served over the ship's Gunfire-Control Radar System. He served in the Navy Reserves from 1952-1960. After his discharge from the Navy, he enjoyed traveling all over the world. He was a Quality Control Supervisor with Homelite and John Deere and retired after 32 years. Bruce enjoyed bowling with his work league, deer hunting, and taking his 2 beagles rabbit hunting. In his later years he was an avid fisherman on Lake Secession going out most mornings with his lake buddy, Larry Walker.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria Jean Arnold Wilson; son, James Allen Wilson (Jan) of Belton; daughter, Karen Raines (Danny) of Travelers Rest; grandson, Jamie McMillan (Rachel); and great grandson, Dominic McMillan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Neal Wilson.
The family will receive friends Saturday, January 29, 2022, from 2:00-3:30 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 4:00 pm in the Chapel. A committal service with military honors will be held at a later date at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
