Clyde Marshall Carithers, age 86, of Anderson, SC, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at Hospice of the Upstate. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Lester Onzlow Carithers and Alma Manning Carithers. He was the youngest of seven brothers and two sisters, all of whom passed away before him. He was born April 19, 1938 in Anderson County.
Excelling in sports in high school, he played football, ran track and played baseball. He set records for low and high hurdles that remained unbroken for several years.
He is survived by his children, Denise Carithers Carney (Bruce), Michael Bryan Carithers (Elizabeth), and Brian Whitten; eleven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Marshall pursued courses at Clemson University and the University of Georgia before joining the Air Force in 1959. After being discharged, he worked for Abney Mills as a purchasing agent for twenty-seven mills. After deciding to work for himself, he started Carithers Real Estate Inc., where he worked for fifty years. As a realtor, he served residential, commercial, and industrial clients in three states. His company became one of the leading independent companies in development and sales.
Marshall was an active force for industrial recruiting in Anderson S.C. He played an instrumental role in securing sewer grants for Anderson County. For several years, he was a site locator and developer for many regional, governmental, and national tenants in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. He established the 263rd Air and Defense Command in Anderson. When the military planned to relocate the 263rd to Florida, he fought hard to keep it in Anderson which saved hundreds of jobs.
