Obituary

Carl Ervin Putnam Jr., 77, or as he was affectionately known by his parents and brothers, "PeeWee", passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2025.

He was the son of the late Carl Putnam, Sr. and Montine Vickery Putnam. He was born in Royston, G.A. and spent his youth in Clemson, S.C. He was a graduate of Daniel High School where he excelled as a first chair clarinet player in the band. He was also a proud service member of the United States Navy where he continued to showcase his musical talents in the U.S. Naval band. After completing his service, he obtained an engineering degree from Tri County Technical College which led him to a 30 plus year career with BellSouth and Byers Engineering in Atlanta.

Throughout his life, in addition to his engineering career, he was an avid outdoorsman and naturalist. He maintained close relationships with various local zoos and contributed many specimens, particularly reptiles, for exhibition and study. He also had a love for Indian artifacts and spent countless hours searching fields and riverbanks looking for the perfect arrowhead to add to his collection. And we can't fail to mention his ability to make the best gumbo outside of Louisiana, which he learned while working there during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Carl loved his family and relished his self-penned moniker as the "Pater Familias" of the family. He was proud of his family and was well known to tell anyone who would listen, whether it be stranger or friend. He was a proud husband, father, Papa, brother, son, and friend. He was truly one of a kind, and he was loved.

Carl is survived by his wife, Janice Putnam; daughter, Lori Payne (Teddie); son, Jason Putnam; grandchildren, Alexandra Saindon (Carson), Zachary Clark, Charlie Kate Putnam, and Cassie Putnam, brothers, Eddie Putnam (Lisa), Tim Putnam (Pam), Mike Putnam, and beloved nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, from 1:00-2:30 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. The memorial service will begin at 2:30 pm in the Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to High Praises Church, PO Box 1188, Anderson, SC 29622.
