Charles N. Horne, Jr., age 98, of Honea Path, SC, passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at AnMed Health Medical Center.
Born May 20, 1924, in Raleigh, NC, he was a son of the late Charles N. Horne, Sr. and Lois Lucas Horne.
Charlie was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force where he served during WWII flying a P-47 Thunderbolt. He participated in the European, African, Middle Eastern Theatre where he received 4 Bronze Stars for Air Offensive. His first combat mission was on June 6, 1944. He was the recipient of the French Legion Medal of Honor-Rank of Chevalier; the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Cluster; and the Distinguished Unit Badge-406th Fighter Group.
Charlie met his beloved wife, Coda Wilson Horne, while they were both working at Delta Airlines. He enjoyed a long career in the airline industry and retired from Eastern Airlines in 1984. He was a member of Broadmouth Baptist Church.
He is survived by his sons, Charles N. Horne, III, Christopher E. Horne, and Alexander W. Horne (late wife Susan Clinkscales Horne); daughter, Shannon Cox (late husband Ron Cox); grandchildren, Kelly Hargis, Colleen Hargis, Kenneth Oliver Horne, and Mason Horne; and great granddaughter, Emily Hargis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Coda Wilson Horne; daughter, Emily W. Horne; brother, Brian Horne; and sisters, Hilda Siegmeyer and Marcella Howard.
The funeral service will be held Friday, January 20, 2023, at 1:00 pm at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery with Rev. Justin Phillips officiating.
