Charles E. Hughes, age 87, of Anderson, SC, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born August 18, 1938, in Belton, SC, he was the son of the late Raymond F. Hughes and Frances Tucker Hughes. He was also preceded in death by his brother Herman Hughes and sister, Frances Adams.

Charles was a proud veteran, having served in the United States Army and the National Guard, where he demonstrated unwavering dedication to his country. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to BASF as a shipping clerk, where he became known for his strong work ethic and commitment to his colleagues.

Outside of his career, Charles found great joy in working the land, dedicating countless hours to farming and tending to his garden. Each family gathering was graced by Charles' exceptional cooking, where his world-renowned coconut cake and his unique takes on breakfast favorites, like pancakes and grits or eggs with mustard, would bring smiles and create cherished memories.

In this time of sorrow, let us remember the remarkable man he was-a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and a true workaholic whose life was filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to family. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Peggy Little Hughes; son, Tim Hughes; granddaughter, Karah Hughes and her mother, Cindy Hughes; Karah's friend, Kilee Hawkins, whom Charles treated like a second granddaughter; and numerous adoring nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday June 21, 2026, from 6-8 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 3:00 pm in the chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Pastor Bradley Saxon officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
