Obituary

James Charles McFall, age 75, passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2016. Born in Anderson, SC on January 20, 1941, he was the son of the late James Finlay and late Helena Ella Webb McFall and was raised by a great aunt, Lillian R. Wood. He graduated from Anderson Boys' High School in 1959 and received a BA degree in Journalism from the University of South Carolina. He was a descendant of William McFall, who located in this area from Ireland in 1670's, before Anderson County was incorporated and built what is thought to be the first brick home in the county in 1690. His ancestors provided the facility at High Shoals on the Rocky River for the first commercial transmission of electricity in the South and donated land for the dam and construction of what is now Broadway Lake. He worked as a Reporter, Associate State Editor and Bureau Chief for The Greenville News from 1964 to 1968. During his journalistic career, he covered the Atomic Energy Commission hearings on the Oconee Nuclear Station; groundbreaking ceremonies for the Keowee and Toxaway Dams and a trial in Pickens County which included the first female juror in South Carolina. He later joined Dow Badische Co. (now BASF) as a member of the Anderson Plant startup team in 1964 and later served the company as Anderson Plant Resource Manager and Corporate Human Resource director in Williamsburg, Va. He was a member of the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce in 1981 as Industrial Director and was its President from 1987-1999. During his time as Chamber President, the organization elected the first female and the first black Chairs of the Board of Directors. He had served as: President of the Anderson Area Personnel Association and Anderson Mental Health Association; Chairman of the Boards of Directors of the Anderson Vocational Rehabilitation Center; the Interstate 85 Chamber Coalition of 13 counties bordering Interstate 85; a member of the Advisory Board of the Strom Thurmond Institute at Clemson University and coordinator of the Anderson County Plant Manager's Group for more than 10 years. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Western Carolina Regional Sewer Authority, the Anderson Area Transportation Study Committee, (ANATS), the Anderson chapter, American Red Cross, the South Carolina Mental Association and an Honorary Lifetime Member of the North Carolina/South Carolina Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. He was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Anderson Downtown Revitalization Committee, Friends of the Westside Community Center, the Lake Hartwell Association, the Anderson County Business Education Partnership, and "Vision 20, a public/private community development partnership in the 1980's and the "Anderson County Development Partnership," a public/private partnership of the 1990's He was a recipient of the South Carolina Chamber Executive of the Year Award in 1989, the Anderson Toastmaster's Anderson County Communicator of the Year and the Anderson Rotary Club's Community Service Awards. In 2004, at the age of 65, he completed a 25-mile endurance horse race. He was most proud of his wife, Linda, their children and their families and loved reading, dogs, horses and nature. His favorite quote was "TALK'S CHEAP." He is survived by his loving wife Linda Gaffney McFall; a son, Michael Gaffney McFall and his wife Anna of Charleston, SC; a daughter, Rebecca McFall and her husband Joseph Nordlinger of Napa, CA and four grandchildren, Hattie, Daylan, Emma and Lucy who affectionately called him "Choo-Choo." In addition to his parents, Charles was predeceased by his son, James "Jimmy" Charles McFall, Jr. The Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at 4:00 p.m. at North Anderson Community Church Presbyterian with Rev. Dr. L. Tom Richie officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to North Anderson Community Church Presbyterian at 4200 Liberty Hwy., Anderson, SC 29621.
