Obituary

Mr. Charles James Riddle, formerly of Reed Place and The Garden House, died on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at the Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home. He was 86.Mr. Riddle was born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1919 and grew up in Laurel Hill, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Charles James and Georgia Cain Riddle.He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Matheson Warner Riddle, three sisters and one brother. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.Mr. Riddle was a Lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan during the Occupation. He and his family moved to Anderson in 1950 where he opened Riddle Furniture Company. Mr. Riddle was very active in the civic affairs of Anderson. He served as president of the Anderson Merchants Association and the Lion's Club. He was on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce, the Salvation Army, the Anderson Area Hospital, and the Anderson Country Club. Mr. Riddle was also on the Building Committee of the YMCA on Greenville Street.He attended St. John's United Methodist Church where he was an elder and taught Sunday school for over 20 years. He also was president of the Dick Ligon Bible Class.Mr. Riddle is survived by his three daughters and their husbands; Brenda and Carl Oehmig, Cheryl and Larry Ratliff, and Debra and Jeff Herbert all of Anderson; six grandchildren, Leib Oehmig and his wife Donna, Annaliza Oehmig Moorhead and her husband Kirk, Lauren Warder Gvillo and her husband Jeff, Arden Ratliff, Jordan Herbert and Matt Herbert; two great-grand children, CG and Hunter Oehmig.Entombment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum and a private family service will be held at a later date.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, 515 South McDuffie Street, Anderson, SC 29624-2372.
