Charles Thomas Swaney, also known affectionately as Hollywood, of Pendleton, SC passed away Thursday, July 21, 2022, at The Rainey Hospice House.
Born April 10, 1937, in Anderson County, SC, he was a son of the late Ruzell Mize Moore and the late James E. Swaney. He was married for 58 years, until her death in 2014, to the late Marie Durham Swaney.
Charles was a man of many trades. He worked in textiles for years and then he and his wife, Marie, began a ministry that went on for decades. The Gospel Travelers was formed in their living room and grew from small local churches to traveling all over the southeast to mid-western states. They sang from the depths of their hearts, all for the Glory of God. He was not only a gospel singer, but he was a "fix-it" man and could grow vegetables to feed thousands from just a small plot of dirt. The whole world knew he always had a pocket full of candy. He had a quick wit, over-all's was his favorite attire, and he loved to fish. Seven days a week was spent with a morning biscuit from Bojangles, a ride through the Fants Grove area, a honey bun and studying his Bible which he read many times. Charles never met a stranger and always had a big smile . He was a son, husband, and father, but was known as "Chasles," "m'-daddy," candy-man, Pop, and Hollywood. Family was his life. He loved his kids, but the grand-children and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. He has left a perpetual ache and a bright light in the lives of his family. But, the Gospel Travelers are reunited and singing again for the Glory of God!
He is survived by his children, Tony C. Swaney (Anita), Mitchell J. Swaney (Kathy), Kenny R. Swaney (Cindy) and Lynn S. Crawford (Steve); grandchildren, Heath Swaney (Tabitha) Anna Thomason (Jason), Heather Caldwell (Jeremy), Holly Lee (Jeremy), Chad Crawford (Victoria), and Clay Crawford (Kristen); great-grandchildren, Gavin, Cowan, Cyler, Kenna Laine, Kash, Ella Grace, Paisley, Tinley, Jax, Scarlett and one on the way; and many nieces and nephews that will always cherish the meals and times spent with Uncle Charles.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by brothers, Ed Swaney and J.V. Swaney and sister, Nell Durham.
A funeral to celebrate the life of Charles will be Sunday, July 24, 2022, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Rev. Philip Blankenship will officiate.
