CORA L LAWTON GRAY May 4, 1920 - August 31, 2012 ANDERSON, SC Cora Lee Lawton Gray of 9317 Highway 81 South, Iva, SC passed away on Friday, August 31, 2012 at Rainey Hospice House. She was the widow of the late Edward W. Gray and the daughter of the late John Ross and Pearl Mauldin Lawton. She graduated as Valedictorian from Iva Public School, received a BA degree in Mathematics and English from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC, a Master's degree from Furman University, Greenville, SC, and several credits towards a PHD from Clemson University, Clemson, SC. She was an educator for a total of forty years. She taught at Welcome High School (now Carolina High), Greenville, SC and retired from McCants, Anderson, SC. Mrs. Gray was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church having joined after her marriage to Mr. Gray. She taught the Reba Wansley Sunday School Class, served as director of Women Missionary Union, Vacation Bible School, and several other capacities for many years. She was a trustee of the church. Mrs. Gray is survived by three sisters, Betty Jo Bickley - Adams and her husband Ansel, Martha Gray and Polly Compton; two God- grandsons, Reid and Jim Latham and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Rob, Jake, and Arthur Lawton and five sisters, Frances Burdette, Fannie Mae McBride, Rita Ferguson, Cleo Craft and Ruth Arnold. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 2, 2012 at 3:00 PM at Good Hope Baptist Church with Reverend Daniel Atkins and Reverend Jerry Gray officiating. Interment will follow at Iva City Cemetery. Honorary escorts will be the Reba Wansley Sunday School Class. The family will be at the home of her sister, Jo Bickley- Adams, 517 Pollard Road, Starr, SC and will receive friends prior to the service at Good Hope Baptist Church from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Hope Baptist Church, 221 Good Hope Baptist Church Road, Iva, SC 29655.
