Obituary

Curtis "Curt" William Pennington, Jr., age 79, of Anderson, SC, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2023 after a brief illness. Born August 11, 1943, he was the son of the late Curtis William, Sr. and Anna Dean Jones Pennington. Curt grew up on the family farm in Starr, where he baled hay, fed cows, rode his favorite horse Stormy, hunted, and played tennis on the family's clay court. As a child, he often walked to and from Starr Elementary School just a quarter of a mile from his home. He graduated from Crescent High School and Clemson University, his father's alma mater. During summers away from college, he worked for Clark Schwebel Corporation in Anderson and spent weekends at the lake waterskiing. Following his education, he began a 25 year career with Clark Schwebel where he became Superintendent of Quality Assurance, a position that took him as far away as Japan. Always an athlete, he studied martial arts and became a high ranking black belt. According to his teacher Denny Shaffer, "Curt excelled as a competitor, an instructor, and a leader. He had a body and will of iron with a heart of gold." Curt's greatest loves were his wife, Debbie, with whom he shared 27 years of marriage, and his son, Trey, along with daughter-in-law Carrie, and grandchildren Reese, Presley, and Sawyer. He took great pride in watching Trey excel in athletics, education, his career, and especially his family life. And he enjoyed seeing his grandchildren compete in sports and succeed in school. He also appreciated family gatherings with is sisters Dee Pennington and Liz Pennington Newall and brother-in-law Billy Newall all of Anderson. A man of faith, Curt grew up as a member of Starr United Methodist Church. Later he and Debbie joined the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Anderson. The Pennington family will hold a remembrance gathering on Sunday, January 8, 2023 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. Services will be private.
