D. WILSON STRINGER
Drayton Wilson Stringer, age 98, passed away on June 5th, 2015.Mr. Stringer is survived by his children, Mr. and Mrs. Smith File (Pam), Mrs. Mikie (File) Cole, and Mr. and Mrs. George (Marjorie File) Campbell, granddaughter Angela Van De Merwe (Vim), 7 other grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and his faithful caregiver, Postelle Lewis.
Wilson was preceded in death by his spouse, Gladys (Smith) File Stringer, son Gilbert W. File, son in law Pruitt Cole, grandson Michael Cole as well as his seven brothers and sisters: Mrs. Willie Huggins of Andrews S.C., Mrs. Lillie King, Mrs. Sue Owens of Anderson S. C., Brothers Mr. Elemer, Fred, Harlee and L.D. Stringer of Belton and Anderson S.C.
Born in Anderson County to the late Mr. and Mrs. Layette Stringer on October 10, 1916, D. Wilson Stringer went on to be a graduate of Boys High School Class of 1933, an honor graduate of Anderson College in 1935 and graduated The University of South Carolina as a Phi Beta Kappa as well as Magna Cum Laude in the Business of Science & Commerce in 1937. Mr. Stringer was a retired Major in the Air Force Reserves and flew 25 missions in World War II, piloting B-17 and B-29 planes over Germany and France, a member of the U.S. Army Corps, 8th Air Force. He then settled back in Anderson, founding Stringer Oil Company in 1954 then expanding to Stringer Oil/LP Gas Company in 1966, retiring at the age of 94 in 2010 from the family owned business now run by his son, G. Smith File. He was a faithful member of Graceview Baptist Church and passed away surrounded by loved ones at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.
The family request in lieu of flowers, that any donation can be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621; Graceview Baptist Church, 120 Centerville Road, Anderson, SC 29625; or a charity of one's choice.
Visitation will be at The McDougald Funeral Home from 2:00-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 14th. The funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. in the McDougald Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Dr. Robbie D. Garrett officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park at approximately 5:00 p.m. The family has requested anyone wanting to honor him as well as any Veterans of Military service is welcome to attend the graveside Military Service. He would be honored.
