Obituary

Dan McIntosh Brown, husband of the late Ada Lee Loftis Brown, died on August 29, 2016 at his residence. He was born on August 14, 1925. Dan was the son of the late L. M. Brown and Julia McIntosh Brown of Sumter, SC. He is survived by sisters-in-law, Mrs. Linda (Sloan) Brock, Mrs. Marjean Loftis, Mrs. Ruth Loftis, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dan graduated from Edmons High School in Sumter, SC. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the European Theatre. He attended the University of South Carolina where he met his wife Ada. During his later years he received his graduation degree from the University of South Carolina, where he walked and received his diploma at age 89. Immediately after the University he went to work with the Internal Revenue Service as an Internal Revenue Agent auditing Income Tax Returns. He retired August 30, 1980 as a Grade 13 Field Agent after 32 years. After retiring, he worked part time over 25 years as an Enrolled Agent primarily representing taxpayers before the IRS. He attended United Methodist Churches all of his life. He was a certified Lay Speaker for 39 years, and was an active member of the Anderson District Lay Speaker Committee. He taught the Lay Speakers Basic Training course for many years. Dan was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and served in many capacities, including, member of the Board of Stewards, Superintendent of Sunday School, Lay Delegates to the South Carolina United Methodist Annual Conference, which he did with his wife, and one of the teachers in the Marshall Fant Class, formerly the Fellowship Class. He was a member of the Anderson Golden K Kiwanis Club, where he served as Secretary and President. Macular Degeneration in February 2009 caused him to stop active participation in income tax work, church activities, and driving. He continued to enjoy his long retirement for many years. A Memorial service will be held on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Dr. Kitty Holtzclaw officiating. Interment will follow at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veteran's Cemetery with military honors at a later date.
