CARROLL BROWNJUNE 24, 1916 - June 19, 2010 ANDERSON, SC -- David Carroll Brown, a leader of his church and the Anderson community, died June 19, 2010. He enjoyed each of his 93 years. Mr. Brown was born June 24, 1916. He was the son of the late Dillard Clarence Brown and Anna Clinkscales Brown and lived in Anderson all of his life. At age 12 he became the youngest Eagle Scout in America. He graduated from Anderson Boys' High School and was Senior Class President. He graduated from Duke University where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Brown was married to the late Mahalie King Brown, also of Anderson, for 70 wonderful years.Mr. Brown and his brothers owned and operated the Anderson Hardware and Wholesale Grocery Company in downtown Anderson for several decades. He retired from the business in 1972 as President. Mr. Brown was an active life member of the Kiwanis Club for more than 50 years, serving as President in 1957 and receiving the George F. Hixson Fellow Award. He also served his community as a member of the Board of the Salvation Army and as Vice-President, as a member of the Tuberculosis Association of Anderson County Board and as its Vice President, as a member of the Board and President of the Anderson County Y.M.C.A., and he was a charter member of Anderson Heritage, Inc. Mr. Brown is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. David Carroll Brown, Jr. lives in Los Angeles, California with his wife Deborah Brownell Brown. They have two children, Lindsey Copeland Brown and David Hudson Brown. Mahalie Brown Davies and her husband, William Stuart Davies, reside in Columbia, South Carolina and have three children, Sterling Graydon Davies, Robert Rutledge Davies and Mahalie Davies Moore. Thomas Clinkscales Brown and his wife Lynn Pruitt Brown reside in Greenville, South Carolina and also have three children, Emily Hudson Brown, David Webb Brown and Catherine Ann Brown. Carroll Brown was a dedicated Christian and lived his life accordingly. He was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Anderson serving in many positions of leadership including Deacon, Trustee and Treasurer. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. His presence will be sorely missed by all who knew him. The family will have a private graveside service.
