David Lee
Hooper, Sr.
June 16, 1935 – March 6, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved David Lee Hooper, Sr. He peacefully left this world on March 6, 2025, surrounded by loved ones and the cherished memories he leaves behind. While we mourn the loss of an exceptional man, we find solace in celebrating a life lived with unwavering passion and purpose.
David was born on June 16, 1935, in Anderson, South Carolina. He was the son of the late James C. and Minnie Lee Pierce Hooper. He graduated from Boys High in 1954 and from Furman University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. David was one of the former owners of Hooper Brothers Shell Service Station. David retired from the South Carolina Department of Social Services in 1999. He was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church.
David was the Captain of the Boys High Football Team and in Who's Who. He was the Director of the Anderson Jaycees in 1968, served on Anderson City Council from 1968 – 1972, and served on the Anderson County Council from 1977-1982 and from 1985-1992. He was a Life Member of Masonic Ruff Lodge #240 and a member of the Electric City Lions Club.
On June 14, 1958, he married the love of his life, Joyce Thrasher Hooper. She and David shared 62 wonderful years together and were blessed with three children and many friends. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and a great grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was very proud of his three children and their families who he loved dearly.
David is survived by his three children: a son, David L. Hooper, Jr (Tammy) of Fayetteville, Georgia; Daughters, Ruthie Hooper Bishop (John) of Irmo, South Carolina, and Jean Hooper Rickenbaker (David) of St. Matthews, South Carolina. He was a loving grandfather to five grandchildren, Tisa Hooper Johnson (Jeff), David L Hooper, III, Benjamin Hooper all of Fayetteville, Georgia, Mary Ruth Rickenbaker and Dottie Rickenbaker of James Island, South Carolina and great granddaughter Ayla Hooper of Washington, DC; a sister-in-law Gloria Thrasher Roof of Greenville, South Carolina and two nieces Joy Roof Howle (Jeff) and Robyn Roof Vitosky (Stephen) both of Greenville, two great nephews, Dylan and Ryder Howle.
David was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, brothers; Alfred Hooper, James Hooper, Ezekiel Hooper, and Theron Hooper; sisters, Adelle Medlin, Aliene Dixon, Gaynell Kay; three nephews Leslie Hooper, Malan Hooper, and Jeff Hooper and two great nephews Jonathan Allen, and Matthew Hooper.
His services will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at 2:00PM at Boulevard Baptist Church, 700 Boulevard, Anderson South Carolina 29621. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00PM prior to the service at the church. The service will be live streamed via the Boulevard Baptist Church website at www.boulevardbaptist.com . The service will be followed by an interment at New Silver Brook Cemetery, 602 East Schockley Ferry Road, Anderson Carolina 29621.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and deep appreciation to his three loving and special caregivers, Vernette Shivers, Eartha Pearce, and Carol Roberts, in addition the staff at Harbinson Shores Assisted Living and to All Seasons Hospice. The family appreciates the wonderful care and compassion they provided to David.
