After a life well-lived, Deanna M. Reed passed away on January 12, 2018, just a few days before her 78th birthday.
De, as she was known to her friends, was born on January 20, 1940, in Patterson, NJ to Alvin and Ida Mae Werkheiser. She had a beloved brother, Al (Jane) and sister, Vilma (Chuck); all who have since passed.
She went to high school in Easton, PA, then left for Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA and it was there she met the love of her life, Opie Reed, Jr. After graduating from college, Opie and De joined in marriage in 1961 and have been inseparable for the past 56 years.
De started her career as an elementary school teacher until her first child when she chose to stay home and raise their family; Opie (fianc, Brenda Phillips) of Newport, TN, Jennifer (James Williams) of Rochester, NY and Kelly (Jeffrey Brunelle) of Normandy, TN.
Opie was an engineer for Eastman Kodak and his job took their growing family across the country to California's Pacific coast for several years until they returned to the east and bought a small farm in Holley, NY.
De was a devoted mother and an active volunteer for her children's schools and their church, St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Brockport, NY where they were members for nearly 30 years. De was also a boy scout den mother and a girl scout leader. She made sure to attend every concert, every game, every play and never missed even the small moments in her family and friend's lives.
In the 80's, De decided it was time to pursue a new path. She went back to school and earned her master's degree and (CAS) Certificate of Advanced Study from The College at Brockport SUNY.
De worked in elementary special education but was elated when she landed the first elementary counseling position in Albion, NY. This was her dream job and she pioneered the counseling program until she retired 20 years later.
De worked hard and led a blessed life. They celebrated the births and so many important milestones of each of their seven grandchildren, Nana leaves behind, Lee (Julia Glass) of Greenville, SC, Jessica (James Woody) of TN, Alicia of TN, Nole of Fort Bragg, NC, Sammee of TN, Jake and Jayne of Rochester, NY.
Opie and De loved to travel, almost always finding an exotic place to celebrate each wedding anniversary; Hawaii was the 35th and Alaska the 50th.
Ocean, seas, lakes and the warm sun have always called out to De, which is why the two retired to Lake Hartwell in Anderson, SC. De and Opie loved their community and joined Grace Episcopal Church 14 years ago. De spent a lot of time at Senior Solutions helping Opie teach a popular Tai Chi Chih class. They also enjoyed finding new restaurants and sharing a bottle of wine. Their home was always filled with visitors.
She was a book-lover, committed journaler, avid gardener, lover of arts and music as well as a gifted artist (many of her oil paintings can be found in her friends and family's homes). De cherished many beautiful friendships during her life, including the companionship of her loyal westie, Lily.
De has always been strong in her faith and we know she is now surrounded by God's love, but she will be forever missed by those she left behind.
At her request, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Grace Episcopal Church on 711 S. McDuffie Street in Anderson, SC.
Donations in memory of De may be made to, to Grace Episcopal Church, 711 S. McDuffie St., Anderson, SC 29624.
