CENTENARIANLILAH WHITTENMay 17, 1908 - December 4, 2009ANDERSON, SC ' Sara Delilah Evans Whitten, age 101, of Anderson, died Friday, December 4, 2009 at her residence.Born in Iva, SC on May 17, 1908, Mrs. Whitten was the wife of the late Jerry Franklin Whitten and a daughter of the late Charles Crayton Evans and Nellie McMahan Evans. Mrs. Whitten attended Girls' High School. She worked for several years at the Orr Mill then worked for the Anderson County Sheriff's Department as a clerk for 23 years where she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Whitten was a member of Orrville Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 76 years. She was a member of the choir and the Women's Missionary Union (WMU).Survivors include a sister, Laura E. Martin; a sister-in-law, Mildred Evans; several nieces and nephews, and special caregiver, Rozena Mattress.In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Whitten is predeceased by a brother, Grier Evans, sisters Gladys E. Watt and her husband Johnny Watt, Frances E. Morris and her husband Tony Morris, and a brother-in-law Wallace Martin.The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Orrville Baptist Church with Dr. Wendell Bannister officiating. Interment will follow in New Silver Brook Cemetery.The family will receive friends at Orrville Baptist Church prior to the service on Sunday from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Orrville Baptist Church, 2620 S. Main Street, Anderson, SC 29624.The family would like to offer a special thanks to Hospice of the Upstate.
