Donald G. Tilghman, age 70, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, Friday, July 28, 2017, at Rainey Hospice House. Born June 3, 1947, in Kinston, NC, Donald was the son of the late Edgar Frank Tilghman and Lula Tilghman Scott. Don was loved and respected for his kindness, gentleness, humor and dedication. He was a man of strong faith. The adversity he faced refined him into a man of strength, courage and generosity. Don spent his childhood from age 8 at Kennedy Memorial Children Baptist Home in NC. He was an entrepreneur starting Cross Ambulance Service with one ambulance he parked outside of a modest home. Within just a few years he grew it to include dozens of vehicles serving the greater Milwaukee area in emergency and wheelchair transport, and a first aid training division. He retired with his wife to live on Lake Hartwell in Anderson, SC, creating memories with his children and grandchildren. Don is survived by his wife who was the love of his life, Jeanette Tilghman; his children, Terri Tilghman of Greenville, SC, Mark Tilghman of St. Simons Island, GA, Todd Tilghman of Nolensville, TN, and Katherine Tilghman Carter of Appleton, WI; 16 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; his beloved sister, Frances Tilghman Jones of Watertown, WI; and his brother Frank "Buddy" Tilghman of Milwaukee, WI. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Edna, Bobby and Kenneth. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at The McDougald Funeral Home prior to the service. The Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. A private family entombment will follow at Graceland East Memorial Park Mausoleum, Simpsonville, SC.
