Obituary

Doris Darby Burdette, age 71, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

A lifelong resident of Anderson, SC, she was born on November 21, 1952, and was a daughter of the late Thelma Doris Darby Hicks and Walter Hicks. She was also preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Doris enjoyed a long career as a beautician in Anderson from 1978 until 2021 and was the owner and operator of Doris' Beauty Shop. Even after her retirement, she continued to cut hair for anyone who needed it in her home as she enjoyed it so much. She was a fantastic cook and loved cooking for her family and especially enjoyed Sunday dinners. One of her favorite traditions was her annual holiday baking with her grandchildren. From childhood into adulthood, she taught them all how to bake Christmas goodies and holiday meals. Truth be told, it was the kids' favorite tradition too!

All who knew Doris had, at one time or another, been on the receiving end of her acts of kindness and service. As a former military wife and mother, she considered it a privilege and a duty to serve and honor veterans. She served with Vets Helping Vets Anderson and was their first honorary member. She was also instrumental in sewing quilts for Quilts of Valor in the local area. She presented many vets with their own quilt as a small thank you for their service and sacrifice.

Doris had a green thumb and could grow just about anything. She took pride in her yard and her flowers and loved to sit on her front porch and watch the birds. She knew the Lord and her faith was strong. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

Her greatest pleasure in life was her family. She loved and cherished every moment she spent with them. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy! She leaves them with many wonderful memories to cherish for years to come.

She was the devoted wife of Jimmy H. Burdette, Sr. for 54 years; the best mama to her children, Retha Burdette Owens (Tony) of Barnwell, SC, Jimmy H. Burdette, Jr. (Michele) and Joey M. Burdette (Melissa) both of Anderson; and the best "Granny" and "Gingy" to her grandchildren, Brittany Cannon, T.J. Owens, Blake Owens (Hallie), Racquel Slaton (Nathan), MacKenzie Marchbanks (Hunter), and Drake Burdette; and great grandchildren, Jayce Klebe, Carter Owens, Haper Klebe, Carsyn Owens, Harper Slaton, and soon to be great grands Jaxon Slaton and Huntley Marchbanks. Also surviving is a sister, Gena Gosnell of Piedmont.

The family will receive friends Friday, August 16, 2024, beginning at 1:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 3:00 pm in the Chapel with Rev. Sam Duncan and Rev. Chad Gamble officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Veterans Mausoleum.

The family requests no flowers but would ask that you consider making a donation to a cause dear to Doris' heart, Vets Helping Vets Anderson, P.O. Box 265, Anderson, SC 29622.
