Dorothy "Dot" Phillips Vance, age 91, of Anderson, SC, died Monday, March 9, 2015, at Avante at Charlotte, NC. Born in Sylva, NC, she was the daughter of the late Iva Lee Henson Phillips and the late Simon Jerome Phillips. She was the granddaughter of the late Nancy Adelaide Calhoun and the late Burton Rickman Henson. She was married for 51 years to her beloved husband, the late Herbert Vance until his death in 1997. Theirs was a true World War II love story, when a returning young soldier entered Woolworths Five and Dime Store in Sylva, NC and locked eyes with a petite, raven haired young woman selling candy at the candy counter. It was love at first sight and remained a continuing love. She was Salutatorian of her graduating class at the Willets School in Sylva, NC, a devoted wife and mother, and tireless worker in North Anderson and First Baptist Churches in their Women's Missionary Unions. She is survived by her son, Chuck Vance and his husband Vince Bertucci of Atlanta GA, her daughter, Linda Vance Campbell of Charlotte NC, her granddaughter Meredith Campbell, of Charlotte NC, her grandson Matt Campbell and his wife, Mika, of Charlotte NC, and two great granddaughters Savannah and Zephyr Campbell of Charlotte NC. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Noel and Emerson Phillips, and sister, Betty Phillips Johnson Frady. A Graveside Service to honor and celebrate the life of Dorothy Vance will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson, SC. with Rev. Dr. Ron Fousek officiating.
