Dr. Kent Gardner, age 86, died Thursday, December 29, 2022, at Dominion Senior Living of Anderson.
Born June 2, 1936, in Manhattan, NY, he was the son of the late Graham Gardner and Marian Kent Gardner. He attended Bronxville High School, Brown University, Wesleyan University, and the University of North Carolina, earning master's degrees in Education and History and a Ph.D. in political science. He was a proud United States Marine.
Kent was a lifelong Educator, Scholar, and Philanthropist. He began his career as a High School teacher in Vermont and Connecticut and went on to teach at Queens, Pfeiffer, and UNCC in North Carolina. Before his retirement, he worked for the Charlotte Observer and taught at the Cannon School outside Charlotte.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Kent Gardner Foster (Traverse), Jane Kent Gardner, and Tricia Kent Gardner Lytle (David); grandchildren, Traverse Scofield Foster IV (Lauren), Gardner Foster Bryson (Brian), McLean Gardner, Graham Kent Robinson, Thomas Stone Foster, and Katie Gardner; great-grandchildren, Piper, Fields, Willow, and Abel; and many beloved grand-pets.
The family is grateful for all the love, support, and care from The Summit Place, Charlotte, NC, and Dominion Senior Living in Anderson, SC.
A Memorial Service and Interment for family and friends will be on January 15, 2023, at 3:30 PM, in the Sacred Garden and Columbarium, Avondale Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC, with the Rev. Jennifer Fouse Sheorn presiding. A reception will follow.
