Dr. James Dana Hill
Dr. James Dana Hill, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at the Rainey Hospice House.
Born May 1, 1926 in St. Albans, West Virginia, he was the son of the late John Dewey Hill and the late Ada Jane Ferrell Hill. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Mantanikau (CVE 101) in the Asiatic-Pacific fleet. He was the receipent of the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. The ship and its crew were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for action in the Pacific.
After his Honorable Discharge, Jim completed his undergradute degree at Eastern Kentucky University and pursued a professional degree in podiatric medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There he joined the podiatric fraternity, Pi Epsilon Delta, later becoming its' president. In his senior year, he married his childhood sweetheart, Ernestine Hoffman, on the nationally televised show, "Bride and Groom."
After receiving the degree of Doctor of Podiatric Medicine and at the invitation of the Chamber of Commerce, he and his bride moved to Anderson, South Carolina, where he became the first podiatrist to practice in Anderson, ultimately serving the people of Anderson and the surrounding areas for a total of 60 years.
Early in his practice Dr. Hill earned an appointment by Governor John Belle Timmerman to the Board of Podiatry Examiners. This appointment was renewed by the governors of South Carolina for the next 24 years. During this time, his practice grew to include treating patients from four states - Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and South Carolina. Dr. Hill was active in the South Carolina Podiatric Medical Association, having served as president of Region 8 as well as president of the State Association. In 1991 he received the "Outstanding Podiatrist in South Carolina" award. He was also a founding member and Fellow of the Academy of Ambulatory Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Dr. Hill's greatest professional joy was having his youngest son, Dr. Ferrell Collins Hill, join his practice in 1993. They continued to enjoy a joint practice for 20 years, until his reluctant retirement in 2013.
Dr. Hill served in other notable capacities during his life in Anderson. He was on the boards of Traveler's Petroleum and the Anderson Savings & Loan. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and Scoutmaster of Troop 84 at Central Presbyterian Church where he proudly witnessed his oldest son, James Dana Hill, Jr. achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. In 1984, Dr. Hill was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel. The Colonel's Commission, bestowed only by the sitting Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, has become synonymous with strength of character, leadership and dedication to the welfare of others.
