Obituary

Dr. Albert Stephens Hollingsworth, Jr., 77, of Anderson, SC peacefully passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2020 at his residence. He lived a full life defined by an unwavering faith in God, a deep love for his family and friends, and a tireless sense of service to his community and colleagues. Born January 10, 1943 in Griffin, GA, he was the son of the late Albert Hollingsworth, Sr., and Louvale Goodin Hollingsworth. He earned his A.A. from Emory at Oxford in 1962, B.A. from Emory University in 1964, and M.D. from Medical College of Georgia in 1968. Dr. Hollingsworth proudly served his country in the United States Navy as General Medical Officer serving in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, from 1969 through 1971. He practiced pathology in Anderson from 1976 until retirement in 2006. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Anderson Area Y.M.C.A. Al was goal oriented, mentally tough and had a competitive nature; traits that helped not only to succeed professionally, but also in his personal life. He was an all-around athlete, with infectious enthusiasm and sportsmanship. He loved and excelled at any sport he tried, whether on the golf course or scuba diving or on the courts with racquet in hand for tennis. He was an avid gardener and took great joy in caring for his many flowering bushes and trees. Even though he loved outdoors, Al was musically inclined and spent hours indoors playing his piano. His unshakeable optimism for life and contagious smile brought incredible joy and left a lasting mark on the fortunate individuals who knew him. Dr. Hollingsworth is survived by his loving wife Dianne Hollingsworth; children, Dr. John Hollingsworth (Holly) of Winston Salem, NC, and Holley Martin (Rodney) of Calhoun Falls, SC; sister, Joan Hollingsworth Barringer of Gastonia, NC; and grandchildren, John, Griffin, Gabriel, Gracyn, Micah and Holly Elizabeth. In addition to his parents, Dr. Hollingsworth was preceded in death by his very special aunt and uncle, Ruth and Zig Martin; and his first wife, Harriet Holleman Hollingsworth. The memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Dennis Tedder officiating.
