Dr. Malcolm Anthony "Tony" McAlister, 76, of Anderson, SC, died Monday, December 14, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born in Central, SC he was the son of the late Vernon and Sue McAlister of Anderson, SC. He was a graduate of Daniel High School in 1957 where he was the president of the student body and captain of the football and basketball team. He continued his education at Clemson University, graduating in 1961 earning a B.S. in Pre-Med and a minor in Psychology. Following Clemson University, he attended Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, graduating in 1964 with residency at Greenville General before beginning his practice in Belton and Anderson, SC from 1966 to 1985. He founded the Bariatric Clinic in Greenville in 1985. Dr. McAlister was known to his colleagues, residents, nurses, and patients as a compassionate and caring physician.
As a young man, Tony lettered in football, track, baseball and basketball at Daniel High School. He served in the Army Reserves from 1957-1961. His greatest passions were his family, the practice of medicine, and the game of golf, winning multiple club championships, including a three-peat championship at Sapphire Valley and a championship at Cobb's Glenn. He was an alumnus supporter of The Clemson University Foundation and a supporter of The College of Charleston Foundation.
His four children survive him, Theron Parrot (Tish) McAlister of Anderson, Malcolm Anthony (Bonnie) McAlister of Mt. Pleasant, Matthew Alexander McAlister of Anderson, Maresa McAlister (Joe) Darby of Anderson; grandchildren, Meagan McAlister (Travis) Burriss of Anderson, Miranda and Connor McAlister of Greenville, Jack Davis of Anderson, Sara Frances, Malcolm, Edwin and Luke McAlister of Mt. Pleasant, Alexander Poore, Andrew and Austin Darby of Anderson; great grandchildren, Alexis and Lillie Burriss of Anderson; three brothers, Philip (Mary Elizabeth) McAlister of Anderson, Van (Carole) McAlister of Ball Ground, GA., Don Allen (Christian) McAlister of Anderson; sister, Anita McAlister Floyd of Carmel, IN.
He was preceded in death by his son, Marcus Anthony McAlister.
The Graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM, Friday, December 18, 2015 at Memory Gardens in Clemson, SC with Reverend Paul Bayerl officiating.
The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 PM, Friday, prior to the service at The McDougald Funeral Home.
