Dr. Roy Lee Smith, PhD, age 85, passed away on January 20, 2017, at Morningside of Anderson. Born in Jewell Ridge, VA on June 17, 1931, he was the son of the late Avery Lee Smith and the late Narcie Hylton Smith. Dr. Smith proudly served his country in the United States Army, serving in the Korean Conflict as a 116 Army Combat Engineer. He attended King College, East Tennessee State University, earning his Bachelor's degree, Florida Atlantic University, earning his Master's degree, and University of South Carolina, earning his PhD. Dr. Smith served as the former school principal of Calhoun Elementary where he retired. He was a faithful member of St John's United Methodist Church. He is survived by his daughters, Kristina S. Thomas (Eddie), of Seneca, SC, and Jennifer Smith Latto, of Spartanburg, SC; sisters, Edith S. Mullin, of Ft. Pierce, FL, Katherine L. Richardson (Jim), of Jewell Ridge, VA, Ann S. Shreve, of Jewell Ridge, VA, Princess L. Casey, of Richland, VA, and Bonnie S. Agner (Jimmy), of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Megan Hale Thomas, and Elias Avery Latto; and great-grandchildren, Gixxie Michelle Thomas, and Joshua Paul Thomas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Phyllis Hale Smith, who went to be with the Lord in 2006; and a brother, Rufus W. Smith. The funeral service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, January 23, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Kitty Holtzclaw, and Mr. Bob Heritage officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, prior to the service on Monday, January 23, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. Flowers will be accepted.
