Obituary

Mary Eleanor Bonds Farmer, born January 19, 1925, entered the gates of Heaven on Friday, July 27, 2018. She is predeceased by her husband, William Humphreys Farmer, and by her two brothers, Wallace Speed Bonds and Robert Singleton Bonds (Edith). Eleanor was born in Columbia, South Carolina and raised in Georgetown. She was the daughter of the late Robert Waymon Bonds and Mary Speed Bonds. Surviving are her fabulous children: William Humphreys Farmer, Jr., Mary Speed Farmer Lynch, and Albert Manning Lynch, Jr. She specifically asked that her son-in-law not be relegated to parentheses, as she considered him one of her children. Eleanor is predeceased by Linda Ellis Farmer, wife of Bill, Jr., whom she treasured as her own. She is survived by her beloved grandchildren: Mary Anna Lynch Thomas (Greg) of Alexandria, Va., Eleanor Lucille Lynch of Spartanburg, SC, and Jonathan Seykora of Bakersfield, CA. (Katie). Surviving also, are a bevy of treasured nieces, nephews, and cousins. Eleanor was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Following graduation, she worked as a laboratory technician at McLeod Infirmary. She later was employed by the laboratory at the Anderson Memorial Hospital. This assignment brought her to what would become her beloved hometown of Anderson. She enthusiastically embraced upcountry life and met the dashing Bill Farmer. Bill and Eleanor Farmer designed and built their home, where they lived for nearly 60 years. They took great joy and care in designing the home so that the furniture and architectural features from Bill's family home on Whitner Street could be incorporated. It was the scene of many parties and gatherings over the years. Eleanor loved a party and would host one on the spur of the moment. Bill would readily agree to throw open the doors and serve the beverages for a party. It mattered not if the house was in pristine condition. Eleanor was a member of the Bird Club, Senior Assembly, Revelers, E.C. McCants Study Club, Frankie Sand's Wednesday Club, the Saturday lunch group at Skin's Hot Dogs, and a variety of bridge clubs through the years. She loved First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school, served on the Chancel Guild, and received the Presbyterian Women Lifetime Award. Eleanor sang in the choir for a short time, but the message was finally relayed that perhaps her gifts were better used in another area. She was also the de facto Mayor of Greenacres, where she organized ice cream parties for new neighbors, Easter egg hunts, and supper parties. Her Greenacres neighbors remained treasured friends for life. She received the Volunteer of the Year award from the Boys & Girls Clubs. She never met a hobby that she didn't want to try. Her children remember the Swedish Red Ball exercise plan; the Scuppernong wine experiment, the green tea blob cure, the macram plant hangers; the exact replicas of Trisha Nixon's wardrobe, and not quite, but almost embracing the care and keeping of snakes. Genealogy was an interest, until it wasn't fun anymore and she happily declared that "we are kin to everybody!" and that was that! Thankfully, she settled on sewing, cooking, and travel. She had such fun teaching her grandchildren to hem skirts, make biscuits, and embrace a spirit of adventure. Eleanor was a life long learner who loved to read, do crossword and Sodoku puzzles. She held court over historical and geographical subjects; she knew where every river, lake, and mountain range is located on the planet. Eleanor was a voracious reader and was surrounded by books, maps and newspapers until her very last days. The family is so grateful for the amazing men and women at Brookdale Sr. Living Summer House and Hospice of the Upstate, who lavished their talent and love on Eleanor. Also, deepest gratitude to the regular visitors at Summer House who maintained a constant flow of news, funny stories, prayers, hugs, smiles, flowers, Milky Ways, and vegetable sandwiches; keeping life fun and interesting until the end. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 302 West Whitner Street, Anderson, SC 29624, Friends of the Anderson County Library, 300 North McDuffie Street, Anderson, SC 29621 or Rainey Hospice House, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
