Obituary

Long time Anderson resident Elgar P. Ellis, Jr. died Tuesday, October 4th in Charlotte, NC after a brave battle with an extended illness. He was Anderson's first board-certified anesthesiologist, being a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology and a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists. He practiced anesthesiology at the Anderson Area Medical Center from 1962 until his retirement in 1992. Dr. Ellis was born May 15, 1930, in Miami, Florida. He was the son of the late Elgar P. and Margaret E. Ellis. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Marion Horn Ellis. E.P., as he was affectionately known, was an active member of Boulevard Baptist Church where he served faithfully many times as a deacon, as director of several adult Sunday School departments and on many of the church's committees. EP was passionate about music and was a member of the choir for more than 4 decades. He also served a term as a Trustee of Anderson College. Dr. Ellis was a graduate of Wake Forest University where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine (formerly Bowman Gray School of Medicine). He served his internship and anesthesiology residency in the United States Navy at the National Navy Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and after serving seven years in the Navy, resigned his commission as Lieutenant Commander to enter the private practice of anesthesiology in Anderson. He is survived by his four children, James Michael Ellis (Kathleen) of Frederick, Maryland, Lynn Ellis Watson (Mark) of Niceville, Florida, John Stephen Ellis (Julie) of Orlando, Florida, and Mark Edward Ellis (Dee Ann) of Charlotte, North Carolina, eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being handled through The McDougald Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held in the sanctuary of Boulevard Baptist Church on Sunday, October 16 at 2pm. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, per E.P.'s wishes, the family requests contributions be made to the Boulevard Baptist Church Capital Improvement Fund, 700 Boulevard, Anderson, SC 29621 EP lived a life of deep commitment to the Lord, faithful service and generosity. The family knows that to be "absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." (2 Corinthians 5:6-9). We are confident that he is now walking in the presence of the Savior that he served and honored all his life. The family would also like to express its greatest appreciation to the staff of both the Garden House of Anderson, Briar Creek Health Center of Charlotte, and Liberty Hospice for their endless compassion, love, sacrifice, and care for our father. Particularly with Covid, you gave of yourselves unselfishly and provided his final years a quality he never would have enjoyed.
