Obituary

Ellington Hawes Lomas, Jr., age 95, of Anderson, SC, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, December 27, 2024. He was at Rainey Hospice House.

Known as "Hawes", he was born on August 16, 1929, in Columbia, SC, the eldest of the late Ellington Hawes Lomas, Sr. and the late Minnie Willingham Lomas. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Selwyn Lomas and sister-in-law, Suzanne Lomas.

He graduated from Columbia High School, attended the University of South Carolina, and then enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950. After serving during the Korean War, he hitch-hiked back home from California to Columbia, SC. Soon after arriving home, he met his loving wife, Laura Jones, at Main Street Methodist Church. The two were married on March 10, 1956 and were blessed with a loving marriage for 68 years.

Hawes worked from Columbia Beauty and Barber Supply and moved from Columbia to Anderson in 1960. He worked for this company for 32 years before retiring.

He was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Anderson where he served as Deacon, worked with the children's ministries, and attended several mission trips. He was also honored to serve as the Team Chaplain for New Covenant School's football team. He also served on the Board for the Haven of Rest.

Hawes was an avid gardener. He grew vegetables, had a yard full of azaleas, flowers, and bird feeders. He and Laura would sit at their kitchen window watching the birds while they ate their meals.

He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them, in particular his two grandchildren. He was a loyal supporter of the University of South Carolina athletics, was a Gamecock Club Member, football season ticket holder for over 40 years, and he was a founding member of The Gamecock Club in Anderson County.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Jones Lomas; two sons, Mark Lomas (Sherri), David Lomas (Deborah); and grandchildren, Ethan Lomas and Madison Anne Lomas.
