The McDougald Funeral Home2211 N. Main StreetAnderson, SC 29621864-224-4343OBITUARY W/PHOTO ELWOOD FRANK HASKELL ANDERSON, SCElwood Frank Haskell seldom met a stranger and'if he did'he considered it his mission to turn them into a friend. Throughout his life, Elwood held fast to his love for his family, his community, and his country. Even in his 93rd year, he was always willing to lend a helping hand. Born in Newark, NJ, in 1918, Elwood Haskell died on April 20, 2011, after a brief illness. His parents were Frank Nathan Haskell and Clara Wurzbach Haskell. Elwood moved from New Providence, NJ, to Anderson, SC, in 2000 to be near family. True to his nature, he was still volunteering at the Anderson Free Clinic until shortly before his death. The changes he'd seen over his long life were significant. Having served in the United States Army during WWII, he went on to raise a family with his beloved wife of 53 years, Leona Weidner Haskell. Like many of his generation, he began and ended his career at one company: Prudential Life Insurance. While proud of his professional accomplishments, Elwood considered his years as a family man'as well as significant time spent volunteering at the New Jersey Veteran's Hospital, New Providence Senior Center, New Providence Historical Society and with the Boy Scouts of America'to be his most important life contributions. During his years of leadership involvement with the Boy Scouts, he was awarded the Merit of Honor, the Order of the Arrow, and the Silver Beaver Award. He was also an elder and deacon at the New Providence Presbyterian Church. In Anderson, Elwood was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church. Throughout his entire life, he was a passionate collector and enthusiastic traveler. Elwood said goodbye to his wife, Leona, upon her death in 1994. He is survived by his late-life partner and loving friend, Connie Chandler, as well as his daughter Barbara Heintz (Keith) of Anderson, and his son Dennis Haskell (Victoria Medgyesi) of Seattle. His two sisters, Audrey Faust and Mildred Ward, live in New Jersey; his former daughter-in- law, Marguerite Peterson, in Seattle. Elwood was most proud of his four grandchildren: Amy Heintz and Jeff Heintz (Brooke) as well as Derren Haskell and Corrin Haskell (Dominique Floyd). As for his five great-grandchildren'Anna, Andrew, Abigail, Emily Heintz and Ocian Floyd-Haskell'they brought a smile to his face every time.A celebration of Elwood's life will be held on May 7th 2011, at 2 PM at Central Presbyterian Church 1404 North Boulevard Anderson led by the Reverend Dr. David J. Bailey. The family will receive friends in the Gathering Area immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Elwood's name to the Anderson Free Clinic P.O.
