Emma Lee Felkel Holman, age 93, was called home to be with the Lord on November 24, 2018, surrounded by her daughter and son. She was the loving and devoted wife of the late Arthur E. Holman, Jr., who preceded her in death. A native of Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Fred Wilson Felkel, Sr. and the late Altahlee Bewley Felkel.
Mrs. Holman was a truly wonderful wife and mother. She adored and appreciated her many dear friends. Mrs. Holman was involved in numerous community activities. She attended Anderson College and graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, in the Class of 1946 with a degree in English. Following graduation, she worked at the Pine Street Book Store and Gift Shop. Subsequently, Mr. Wilton E. Hall, publisher of the Anderson Independent and Daily Mail newspapers of South Carolina, contacted and invited her to write for his newspapers. Mrs. Holman served as the Woman's Page Editor and as a columnist. Her columns included "The Chatter Box" and later "Em's Casual Corner." Mr. Hall suggested that she contact Mr. Arthur Holman who could inform her about local events and happenings in the Anderson Area. Little did either she or Mr. Holman realize that she was contacting her future husband. Mrs. Holman was a charter member of the Cardinal Racquet Club and was an avid fan of South Carolina Gamecock athletics. She was a member of several local bridge clubs. Mrs. Holman was an excellent cook and an accomplished hostess who enjoyed entertaining at her home. She was an avid reader, and she looked forward to exercising regularly.
Mrs. Holman was a co-leader and participant in the Greenville Chapter of Great Books of the Western World for twenty years. She was a nationally accredited Master Flower Show Judge and Life Member of the National Council of Garden Clubs. She was a devoted and faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church in Anderson and was a past President of the Anderson School of Theology for Lay Persons. Mrs. Holman served on the selection committee for Carolina Scholars, a scholarship program for the University of South Carolina. She was a member of the Carnegie 30 Committee of the Anderson County Arts Council. She was affiliated with the Anderson Garden Club, South Carolina Judges Club, the Anderson County Woman's Club, the Revelers Club, and the McCants Study Club. Mrs. Holman was a founding board member of the South Carolina Academy of Authors. Her special interests included traveling, music, opera, reading, and writing. Mrs. Holman was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Association and the Atlanta Music Festival Association where her membership spanned for over sixty years. Left to carry on her legacy are her family which includes a son, Arthur Elliott Holman, III., a daughter, Emily Holman Sands, and her husband, George Lester Sands, Jr., and a grandson, George Lester Sands, III., all of Anderson. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Wilson Felkel, Jr., and sisters, Catherine Felkel Talbot, Louise Felkel Finney and Dorothy Felkel Truluck. Mrs. Holman was cherished by all of her family and a host of friends.
The family expresses deepest gratitude to J. Carey Jones, Jr. and his associates at C3 Eldercare for the excellent and compassionate care that they provided. Great appreciation is also expressed for the care she received at NHC Healthcare of Anderson Rehabilitation Center and at the Rainey Hospice House.
Funeral Services honoring and celebrating the life of Mrs. Emma Lee Felkel Holman will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 711 South McDuffie Street, Anderson, SC, on Wednesday, November 28th, 2018, at 11:00am with the Rev. John Benjamin Hardaway, IV, officiating. Interment will follow at Old Silver Brook Cemetery.
The family will be at the Sands residence and will remain at Old Silver Brook Cemetery to greet friends following the burial.
