Emory Bowers Kelley, Jr., also known affectionately as EB to his family, of Greenville, SC, passed away Friday, July 22, 2022, at the Richard M Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.
Born January 1, 1929, in Elberton, GA, he was a son of the late Emory B. Kelley, Sr. and the late Erah Vaughn Kelley. He was married for 28 years to the late Syderas Ross Kelley.
Emory was enlisted in the Air Force in 1948 as a handsome nineteen-year-old. He gained expertise in Aircraft Maintenance and this experience took him to Japan, Vietnam and Germany as well as numerous domestic bases during his 21-year career. He was awarded numerous awards for his outstanding military professionalism and devotion to duty. His distinctive accomplishments culminated a distinguished career in the service of his country. Emory retired as a Master Sergeant from the Air Force on September 1, 1971.
Emory learned watch repair as a teenager working at his father's jewelry store in Abbeville, SC and he continued this as a hobby while in the Air Force. Once retired, he pursued studies at Wayne Community College and obtained a Diploma in March 1973 in Watchmaking and Advanced Jewelry Repair. He eventually opened Kelley's Watch and Clock Repair shop downtown Greenville, SC. He served the public with his technical skills, the best selection of cuckoo clocks, and always a smile, for nearly 20 years.
He is survived by three of his four children, Cindy Kelley Newell (Bob), Melanie Kelley Cozzo (David), and Joseph Emory Kelley; grandchildren, Erik Tyler Kelley (Christina), Kelley Sutton Wills (Josh), Thomas Mason Wills II, and Sarah Rose Kelley Newell; great-grandchild, Evelyn Esmeralda Kelley; brothers, David (Heidi), James, and Billy Kelley; sister, Linda Kelley; and many nieces and nephews. Emory is especially remembered for his care and dedication to his son, Joe.
In addition to his parents and mother of his children, he was predeceased by his daughter, Alida Joyce Kelley; his sisters, Amolene Kelley Hayes, Elizabeth Kelley Stone, and Irene Kelley Bolton.
A service to remember the life of Emory will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at 1:00 pm at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
