EVANS IVA, SCMr. Ernest William Evans of Iva, SC and Montreat, NC, died Tuesday, August 02, 2005 at his residence, 403 West Front Street.Born in Iva, SC, Mr. Evans was educated in the Iva Public Schools and was the only child of the late Charles Drennon Evans and Mary Alkanza Cook Evans. While attending Presbyterian College, he played all sports, was a member of the ROTC for four years, was senior class President and Blue Key. He was awarded the Dum Vivimus Servimus by Presbyterian College for promoting the college and continuing its high ideals.After graduation, he joined his father at the family business, Evans Esso and Hardware Store. It was then that he married his wife of 65 years, the late Elsie Ligon Evans. He attained the rank of captain in World War II, being in the 2nd Armored Division. He participated in three amphibious landings during World War II-North Africa, Sicily, and the Second Day Omaha Beach, Normandy. He received two bronze stars for valor. In midlife, he returned to graduate education, receiving a BS in Pharmacy at the University of Georgia. Upon graduation, he joined his father at the Iva Drug Company, founded in 1911. He was a faithful member of Good Hope Presbyterian Church, where he was superintendent of the Sunday School, Deacon, Elder and a lay member in men's work for the Synod. His memberships also include the American Legion, the Iva Lions Club, Rev-Iva, Anderson County Museum Association, and the Board of Directors of Peoples Bank of Iva. He was formerly the chairman of Board of Directors of Peoples Bank of Iva for 20 years and a trustee for the Anderson County School District #3. He loved hiking and backpacking with his children and his grandchildren and also spending time at his home 'Hawkhaven' in his beloved Montreat, NC. Mr. Evans is survived by three sons, Reverend Charles Ligon Evans, Oxford, NC, Doctor Ernest Craig Evans and wife, Sandra, Charlotte, NC and Mr. John Denny Evans, Iva, SC; six grandchildren, Mary Hearndon Pace and her husband, Joey of Jacksonville, NC, Craig Lingle Evans of Atlanta, GA, Jonsie Elizabeth Evans of New York City, NY, Lauren Evans Wilkinson and husband, Martin of Charleston, SC and Sandra Laine Evans and Heath Locke Elsie Evans, both of Charlotte, NC. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Elsie Elaine Evans.Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, August 5, 2005 at Good Hope Presbyterian Church conducted by the Reverend Dr. A. B. Plexico and the Reverend Charles Evans.
