Obituary

Ernestine Hoffman Hill passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at her residence. She was 87. Born in Greenup County, KY, on January 20, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Hoffman and the late Edna Holbrook Hoffman. Ernestine was recognized for her talents as a singer, pianist and dancer at an early age. She fondly remembered those days as the drum majorette for the Russell High School band, winning the title of Miss Tri-State and, studying voice at the University of Kentucky, Marshall University and, most notably, studying voice at Saranac Summer School of Music in collaboration with the world-renowned Juilliard School in New York. With a promising career in voice on the horizon, she found her heart won over by the love of her life, Dr. James D. Hill, marrying him on the popular television show, 'Bride and Groom.' While building a home and family with Jim in Anderson, Ernestine continued to share her gifts with those in the community through her involvement with the Anderson Music Club, Anderson Civic Chorale, private recitals, and Greater Anderson Musical Arts Consortium (GAMAC). She also served the community as a member of Junior Assembly and board member of Anderson Youth Orchestra. Ernestine sang most regularly as soprano soloist in the choirs of Central Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church, with a deep love of sacred music. It was once written of Ernestine that she was basically shy when in the company of others, however when she sang, a wonderful metamorphosis took place. That normally demure personality transformed into the elemental herald. Her essence was so reserved yet her music was so powerful and profound. She is survived by her children, James Dana Hill, Jr. and his wife Marianna Long Hill, of Roswell, GA, and Dr. Ferrell Collins Hill and his wife Dr. Dana Davis Hill, of Anderson, SC; a brother, Dr. Charles Hoffman; a sister, Loretta Hoffman; and two grandchildren, John Collins "Jack" and Mary Lauren Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dr. James Dana Hill; and sisters-in-law, Gae Hoffman and Edith Hill Hammond. The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday, April 22, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Dr. Dennis Tedder officiating.
