Ernest Starr Hansberger, III, age 72, and better known as Ernie, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. Born on June 30, 1949, in Birmingham, AL, Ernie was the son of the late Ernest Starr Hansberger, Jr. and Martha Hartline Hansberger. Ernie attended Auburn University, where he earned both a BS in Aerospace Engineering and an MBA graduate degree. He began his career at NASA, where he fulfilled a life-long dream of working with the space program and wrote software code for the first space shuttle. He ultimately spent the majority of his career as a software engineer and retired from France Telecom in 2017. Ernie was a soft-spoken Christian man who was well-loved and respected by all who knew him. He was selfless, genuine, and reliable. He found no greater joy than when he was spending time with his family and cheering on his Auburn Tigers. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Vicki Fellers Hansberger; children, Davis Lee Edwards and wife Negar, Joy Hansberger Clarke and husband Jeff, and Ernest S. "Skip" Hansberger, IV and Kimberly; grandchildren, Mina Edwards, Cole Clarke, and Haley Clarke; sister, Louise Britton and husband Russell; and brother-in-law, Dr. Gary Fellers and wife Pam. In addition to his parents, Ernie was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, George and Jackie Fellers. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 24, 2021, from 1:30-2:30 pm ET at The McDougald Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 pm at New Silver Brook Cemetery with Rev.
